Nuclear Spring?

Our special nuclear issue (with cover art by Leonard Schlichting, right) features three articles about the Non-Proliferation Review Conference and the continuing crisis over Iran’s possible nuclear ambitions.

Business as Usual Now, Disarmament Perhaps Later
Our nuclear issue kicks off with RenĂ© Wadlow‘s overview of the Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference at the UN in May.

Nuclear Spring: Interview with Jayantha Dhanapala
Aside from the Non-Proliferation Treaty, New START and the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty are coming up for ratification. Will Barack Obama meet his own nuclear-free goals? Metta Spencer discusses these issues with Jayantha Dhanapala, former UN Under-Secretary-General and current Pugwash president.

Big Power Sanctions versus Middle Power Diplomacy for Iran
Brazil and Turkey came up with a workable solution to the Iranian nuclear crisis. Why, then, did the big nuclear powers ignore the deal for yet another round of sanctions? Rajan Philips explains what was at stake.

Also in this issue

The G8 and G20 meetings took place on Peace Magazine’s doorstep in southern Ontario, too late for us to report on the outcome (and the highly controversial policing of the protests). For background on the conferences themselves, read Steacy Henry‘s article Harper’s G20 Agenda or the World’s?.

On the web: System upgrade!

Five years ago, in celebration of Peace Magazine‘s 20th anniversary, we put all the magazine’s archives online. We designed a flexible, PHP-based system which allowed for full searching, links to contributors’ other articles (even for articles with multiple authors) and automatic links to cover art for each issue.

Our flat-text database was indeed flexible and easy to navigate, but hard to edit and update. That’s why we have now — in time for our 25th anniversary! — done an (almost) invisible upgrade which keeps most of the handcrafted features of the original site, but adds a powerful backend. A few features, like our search engine, have different addresses, but the 2000-plus articles in our archive have the same names as before.

The Peace Calendar archive, which covers the period 1983-1984, has also been rejigged, and is fully searchable. It also has a new location: http://tpc.peacemagazine.org.

Our cover gallery can be found at www.peacemagazine.org/covers.htm. Below each cover thumbnail is a link to the article index for that issue.
