Vol.32, No.2: April-June 2016

Saudi Arabia ⇔ Iran

President Hassan Rouhani of Iran

In this issue

Saudi Arabia and Iran
James Dorsey looks at a battle for hegemony that the Saudi kingdom cannot win—even if it were to step away from backing Sunni jihadist groups in Syria, Yemen, and elsewhere. COMMENT

Canada’s Arms Deal with Saudi Arabia
The new Liberal government will not cancel a multi-billion dollar contract for the export of armored vehicles, after all. We can do much better than this when human rights issues are at play, writes Erika Simpson. COMMENT

The New Iran-US Détente
In the wake of a historic nuclear deal—and the victories of moderate and progressive politicians in the February elections in Iran— Mohamad Tavakoli calls for “demonstrated, courageous, patient and mutually beneficial diplomacy” which may also move Iran and Saudi Arabia closer towards cooperation. COMMENT
